I recently dined at Java in Randwick with my girlfriend, a spot I’ve often seen buzzing on weeknights but hadn’t ventured into until now. The visit confirmed why it draws such consistent crowds.
Service is where Java truly distinguishes itself. The host delivers some of the warmest hospitality I’ve experienced in Randwick—genuinely attentive, engaging, and well-versed in the menu. He offered thoughtful guidance on dish pairings, setting a confident tone for the meal.
We opened with the fish cakes steamed in banana leaf, accompanied by a shrimp-paste peanut sauce. This was the standout of the evening: aromatic, layered, and remarkably well executed. The added shrimp crackers made for an enjoyable textural contrast.
The much-talked-about lemongrass fried chicken was competently prepared, though it didn’t quite align with our personal preferences. The coconut rice arrived as a generous, fragrant serving, and the prawn skewers were cooked beautifully. The beef massaman curry, however, leaned watery, and the oversized cubes of beef left the sauce struggling to permeate the meat.
Java also offers BYO alcohol, which adds to its appeal as a neighbourhood favourite—an easy place to settle in without the usual mark-ups.
Between the homely atmosphere, attentive service, and a few truly memorable dishes, Java is a welcome fixture in Randwick’s dining scene. I look forward to returning to explore more of what the kitchen does well.

Fantastic experience at Java Restaurant. We had chicken satay, lemongrass fried chicken and soft shell crab. All the dishes were super flavourful. We asked for spicy and spicy it was !!!🌶️🌶️🌶️ It was a busy evening with only one waiter but still he managed to be very attentive and food came fast. Highly recommend.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE (CASH ONLY)! Some of our favorite food in Sydney. My wife and I came here 3 separate times to eat over a 4 day span because we loved it so much. The owner and staff of the restaurant are so friendly and work so well as a team when the place is packed (plus they always have a smile on their faces).
The first night was extremely busy with a couple of large parties, but the owner and staff did very well keeping up with it all and we were served in a timely manner. The owner even brought us out a small dish of the Indonesian style peanuts, which was unexpected but very nice (they were delicious too) We ordered Martabak Daging (beef, egg, onion and shallot wrapped in crispy pastry), Nasi Goreng (Indonesian style fried rice), and Rendang Sapi (slow cooked beef chunks in coconut cream and gravy). Everything was so good and you can’t go wrong with any of these options but our favorite dish this night was the Rendang Sapi as the flavors really popped and the meat fell apart because it was so tender (recommend a rice dish to eat with it).
The second night, the restaurant was equally as busy as the first night with smaller parties, but we were seated immediately. We ordered Satay Ayam (chicken skewer with peanut sauce), Empal goreng (fried premium beef chunks served with sambal terasi/spicy dip), Kwetiaw goreng (stir fried thick rice noodle with chicken, fish cakes, vegetables, prawn pieces and egg). Once again, all the dishes were outstanding but my favorite dish was the Satay Ayam because the chicken was extremely tender and the peanut sauce was to die for (I wanted to lick the plate clean). My wife’s favorite dish was the Kwetiaw Goreng because it was loaded with veggies and the texture of the thick rice noodle was on point.
The third day for lunch the restaurant was much less busy and the owner brought us out some complimentary shrimp chips that were very unique and tasty. We ordered Ayam goreng sereh (fried chicken marinated in lemon grass and spices), Laksa of Java (soup dish served with vermicelli noodles, topped with bean sprouts, chicken, prawn cutlets, fish cake pieces and egg slices), and Nasi Kuning Polos (rice flavored with turmeric, lemon grass and coconut cream). Our favorite dish was the Ayam Goreng Sereh because there was a good variety of chicken pieces (1/2 chicken) and it was practically falling off the bone. The chicken had a nice lemon grass flavor that was not overpowering.
We wish we had more time in Sydney to try the rest of the amazing Indonesian dishes that are served at Java Kitchen. I can’t say enough about how nice the owner and staff are. We will definitely be coming back to this place when we come back to Sydney.

Went here for dinner yesterday- got a table easily despite it being rather busy. We ordered the lamb satay (satay kambing) and the sop kaki kambing (lamb shin soup), as well as the nasi goreng (not pictured). The lamb satay was one of the best that I had in Sydney, the meat was very tender, and the sauce was addictive! Found myself actually finishing the sauce. The sop kaki kambing was excellent too, very rich in flavour and the lamb shin was really tender. What impressed me the most from this restaurant is the service. Despite it being only being manned by a staff member on busy period, the service was very attentive, polite, and we were even offered free kerupuk and a plate of cut orange as dessert which was a nice touch. It is a nice, intimate restaurant with decent pricing as well. Would highly recommend!

A mate who lives locally brought me here. Him and his wife have been coming for 20 years. So so good! We all shared plates and everything was perfect. We shared the fish Ikan Pepes ( barramundi). Chicken satay. Spinach and garlic. Fish cakes. The place looks very unpretentious and plain but the food is amazing. 5/5.

Lovely to see an obvious local favourite, we wanted to have a go! Service was friendly and welcoming! We ordered heaps, from keropok to start, otak otak, beef sate, and for mains, grilled fish in banana leaves, grilled chicken, kangkung belachan, grilled eggplant with sambal, and for dessert, cendol. All in all, a pretty good experience! We wished for a bit more spice and heat in the dishes that perhaps catered to locals!

It's been a while since the last time we were here. Was wondering if the food was going to be just as good. They didn't disappoint, the divine nasi kuning (turmeric rice) and succulent fried chicken were full of flavours! Sate was a tad too sweet for my taste. Service was excellent! Will come back again to explore other items on the menu.

One of the best Indonesian restaurants in Sydney, if not the best. The place is very unassuming, but the service is warm and attentive, even when they’re still busy at 9pm.
The food was absolutely delicious. Not pictured, but probably my favourite dish was the chicken fried rice. It was so good that we had to order another one. Everything we tried was excellent. The chicken satay was incredibly flavourful, and we also loved the gado-gado, fried chicken, grilled chicken, and seafood noodles.
P.S. We paid a fair bit, but that’s because we ordered heaps. We definitely walked out well beyond harahachibu.
Ahhh, we’ll definitely be back!

Tried this place after seeing the Google reviews and it did not disappoint! The Coconut rice and Ayam Bakar Bumbu Bali were absolutely amazing 👍– super tasty and flavorful. I also ordered Martabak and Es Teller, which were really delicious too. This is truly a must-visit spot if you’re craving authentic Indonesian food – every dish feels like comfort on a plate. Highly recommended, and I’ll definitely come back to try more of their menu. The owner was also really friendly, which made the experience even better.
